Eugenia

Dark sunglasses
Though the sky is grey
She said her eyes
Didn’t look right that day

She must put her best face forward
Pretty paint to hide the lines
It’s 10:30 in the morning
And she’s dressed up to the nines
She does this all the time

You shouldn’t have to try so hard, Eugenia
To prove you are still beautiful
You are still beautiful

Bright red lipstick
On the coffee cup
Her glasses off now
Dark eyes looking up

Does she need all that preparation
Just to face the day?
Or is it her age that makes her see herself that way
I wish I could say

You shouldn’t have to try so hard, Eugenia
To prove you are still beautiful
You are still beautiful

You shouldn’t have so much to do
To show us who you are
You are beautiful
You are still beautiful

You’re never supposed to ask a woman her age
They say it’s not polite
But I don’t understand
Why the years can show on a man
But a woman has to keep it all from sight?

You shouldn’t have to try so hard, Eugenia
To prove you are still beautiful
You are still beautiful

And you shouldn’t have so much to do
To show us who you are
You are beautiful
You are still beautiful
