Lincoln

Where have all our statesmen gone?
Seems their kind have all moved on
Long ago, and so far away

Where once we had great debaters
Now we get loudmouth haters
Twenty-four noisy hours every day

Of all the greats from way back when
There’s one I wish could be here again

We need a man like Abraham Lincoln
Generous, yet strong
Honest as the day is long
He’d show those jerks how things should work
At least that’s what I’m thinkin’
Yes, we need a man like Abraham Lincoln

Abe would never, ever preach
Nor would he flub up a speech
Getting’ all his words in a mess

No PR firm would need to handle
Some humiliating scandal
Like telltale stains on a dress

He would never claim that god
Had chosen him – and Mary Todd

We need a man like Abraham Lincoln
We’d all jump for joy
If we had that man from Illinois
To navigate our ship of state
And keep us from sinkin'
Yes, we need a man like Abraham Lincoln

The kind who’d never bleat or bluster
Or misuse the filibuster
Or proclaim Emancipation
For dishonest corporations
Wouldn’t gut the public schools
Wouldn’t make up his own rules

Yes, we need a man like Abraham Lincoln
With no doubt in his mind
That freedom’s meant for all mankind
Those days when kings and popes run things
Are surely shrinkin'
We need someone to point the way
That just might be a gal someday
We need someone like Abraham Lincoln
