OJAI, HOW ARE YOU?

OJAI, HOW ARE YOU?

OJAI, HOW ARE YOU?
Long time no see. Happy 2020! I’ve got some cool shows coming up in the next few months, and I’d love to see more of all of you this year.
Last October I went once again to FAR-West, the Left Coast branch of the Folk Alliance. The last night I hung out and jammed with some wonderful musicians, including one Bernie Larsen. He had this cool understated style. I guess that comes from playing with greats such as David Lindley and El Rayo-XMelissa EtheridgeLucinda Williams, etc. He started the Ojai Underground Exchange. He is also a record producer and is a big part of the burgeoning music scene in beautiful Ojai, CA.
We started talking about my playing his great venue, but since this would be my first time there, we were thinking of a good match of another artist for a double-bill, and he thought of Brad Colerick (who pretty much owns the music scene in South Pasadena, by the way). So that’s the marquee, ladies and gentlemen:
at OJAI UNDERGROUND EXCHANGE
SAT. FEB. 29, 7:30pm
Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?
My great musician friends Carl Sealove and Scotty Breadman will be playing with me, as well as Tim Fleming, who’s playing with Brad, and will come up and play some steel guitar for me. I plan to bring Bernie himself up to play as well.

Thoughts:

We are heading into a big political season. I think we all know the stakes in this election. Let’s make sure to keep the lines of communication open, people. There will be some who will shout you down, or throw insults at you (people often seem to be ruder in social media than they would be in a real-life conversation, while some are just as angry in person), but whenever we can, I think we should let them get all that out, and then simply keep trying to bring things back to a civilized conversation. It’s unlikely you’ll change minds, but each of us should at least try to ask pertinent questions of each other, and do our best to answer.
Hold on. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
Love,

FOR GRAMMY® CONSIDERATION – CHILDREN’S MUSIC
GARY PRODUCED A NEW RECORD!
Earlier this year, I got the opportunity to produce an album called DITTO KIDDO by STEPHEN MICHAEL SCHWARTZ, a very cool artist who does music for children. It is presently being submitted for the 62nd Grammy® Awards! I hope you will give it a listen or grab yourself a copy for yourself, especially if you have young kids. And if you’re a music industry pro, please consider this great record.
I got to know Stephen in my college days, and since then he has become one of the most respected and popular children’s music artists in the world. For this record, we wanted to use top-notch musicians, and show off Stephen’s excellent songwriting. There’s something for everyone on this record, and wouldn’t it be great if we won?
Here’s how to listen on Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2mnPZ4t
The album has already been a top pick on Apple Music. Stephen just returned from a three-month tour of China, so the album is already gaining worldwide acclaim.
ABOUT THE ALBUM
DITTO KIDDO marks the fourth solo album by Stephen Michael Schwartz whose impressive body of work has spanned over thirty years in the children’s music world. Stephen is ranked by peers and parents alike as one of the premiere singer/songwriters in his genre and DITTO KIDDO underscores that point yet again.
He and producer, Gary Stockdale, have pulled together an impressive array of singers and musicians, including Grammy nominees and winners, Grant GeissmanMB Gordy and Jim “Kimo” West to bring DITTO KIDDO to life…and “life” is what Stephen writes about best. Always with a child’s perspective and a grownup’s sensibilities, this collection of nine original songs will have children saying “I love Stephen”, to which you will respond, “Ditto, Kiddo”.

FULL GARY STOCKDALE SHOW IN CAMARILLO

THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 24th

Yes, I get to perform my FULL SHOW – 2 sets – for the great concert series Camarillo Café, this Saturday night, at 7pm! This show has been going on for nearly 30 years. It was started by Gary and Kathy Lynch. Then it was passed on to Peter Krantz and Becky Glenn, who ran it for about 4 years, and now it has been inherited by Bob Schetter. All of them have been amazing supporters of songwriters and folk musicians for all these years (and Bob is a fine musician himself).

I have performed in 3 concerts there before, each of those times sharing the bill with other fine artists. But this is the first time I’ll get to do my full show. I’ve got new songs, and some great surprises, so I hope to see all of you, and if you make the trek all the way up from Los Angeles, you will get my extra-special gratitude.

Doors 7 PM / Music starts at 7:30. $20 suggested donation at the door.

Then, SUNDAY, AUGUST 25TH  at Feinstein’s at Vitello’s, I’m appearing again with the one-and-only Rosemary Butler in her popular Rose Sings Ronstadt show at 7pm. I’m doing a short opening set, and singing some duets with Rosie. Click here for ticket info.

In other news, I just finished producing an album for a popular and acclaimed children’s music artist named Stephen Michael Schwartz. I’ll be sending out a promo soon for the new album Ditto Kiddo, which we’re hoping will be recognized by the Grammys in the children’s music category. Stay tuned for that announcement.

In the meantime, don’t forget about my record Keep Letting Go, available on AppleMusic, Amazon, Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, and wherever else you find your music.

Summer’s still here, so stay cool, my friends… in every sense of the word.

SOLOS and DUETS

I love singing great songs. And this last month gave me the opportunity to sing a lot of them. First, doing “By The Time I Get to Phoenix” in a tribute to Glen Campbell with the original Wrecking Crew (the session musicians responsible for some of the greatest records in history), singing “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” at Hal Blaine’s (look him up) 90th birthday, and in a show honoring the memory of our friend John Wicks, I got to sing one of his perfect power-pop songs, “That Girl Is Emily.”

Now, THIS COMING TUESDAY, March 12, 7pm at Vitello’s, I’m doing a FULL BAND SHOW, sharing the bill with the talented Alison Lewis. I also get to sing a couple of duets with her. She’ll be mixing her own cool songs with some great arrangements of jazz and folk tunes.

And I’ll be premiering a new song called “WPP.” If you don’t know what that means, come Tuesday night to find out. Backing both of us up, we’ve got my old friends Scotty Breadman (percussion) and Domenic Genova (bass), along with Josh Workman on guitar. The fabulous Hillary Rollins is producing the event, called “Gary Stockdale and Alison Lewis, Together Like Never Before,” and she wants everyone to know that the ticket prices will go up on the day of the show (club policy), so please buy your tickets early. AND, speaking of duets, I will be performing again  – as well as doing an opening set of my own music – with renowned Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne singer and collaborator Rosemary Butler at Bogies on April 4th at 7pm, in “Rose Sings Ronstadt.”. I get to sing a few duets with this beloved performer, as she sings classic tunes, and tells stories of her days working with the legends of pop and rock. Here’s the ticket link:

Hey Irvine and Orange County friends: There’s a concert series that I’d heard about soon after I started going to FAR-West and hanging around in Southern CA songwriting circles. It’s called “The Living Tradition,” and so many great people – many of them friends of mine – have played there through the years. Well, now I get to play there.

THIS Saturday, January 19 (that’s tomorrow). For reservations, concert information and booking inquiries, please call Ron at (714) 997-8590 or e-mail concerts@thelivingtradition.org.

I’m co-billed with a great Boogie-Woogie piano player named Rob Rio. On the website, they say “Caution: Traditional Boogie Woogie music has been known to include mature themes and innuendo.  As such, this show might be considered by some to be rated PG13, so, you may want to bring your teenager with you to explain and interpret some of the lyrics!”

By that, I guess they mean “ask your teenager to explain it to you.” Also, I’m pretty sure they were waiting for someone with that disclaimer to pair me up with ‘cause, you know, I have a bit of adult content in my stuff, too. Thanks to Ron Bloom for the invitation. I’m honored to be there.

ALSO (and this is very exciting) Sunday January 27th, I’ll be performing 2 shows (6pm and 8pm) at Bogies with members of the ORIGINAL WRECKING CREW, the musicians that played on a ton of the major hits of the 60s. We are doing a tribute to Glen Campbell, on whose records these guys played. On the show with me will be legendary musicians like Don Randi, Don Peake, and Chuck Berghofer. (Look up their many credits, which include Peake inventing the famous riff at the top of “Let’s Get It On,” and Berghofer’s famous descending bassline in “These Boots Are Made For Walking.”) I’m appearing with other great singers like Lamont Dozier, Jr,, and Marty Ross. AND I’m getting to duet with the talented Kiki Ebsen
